Identity Conscious Teaching

Teaching English Without Erasing Identity

Language is not simply a form of communication. Language is the vessel through which heritage and history is preserved and passed down. Language is identity, culture and the lens through which we see the world. “Languages carry within them worldviews, ways of conceptualizing reality, and that the loss of a language may be more far-reaching than most linguist can understand” (Seonaigh MacPherson 2003 as cited in Motha, 2014). Therefore, we must ensure that the language and worldviews we may be teaching do not overshadow or erase the languages and worldviews that are already present in our students’ funds of knowledge.

So, should you quit your job and find a new career? No, not at all. We must acknowledge “how power and privilege circulate in language education.” (Motha, 2014) And do our best to balance the scales by reflecting on why we teach, how we teach and what we teach while keeping in mind who we teach.

“While on the surface language is about communication, it is also a marker of identity and an instrument of power.”

Carola Suárez-Orozco

“Those who authentically commit themselves to the people must re-examine themselves constantly.

-Paulo Freire

Why Center Culture?

Culture offers a wealth of knowledge that can inspire educators to connect with their students on a deeper level. By understanding and integrating local traditions, values, and social norms, teachers can create a more engaging and relevant learning environment that resonates with their students’ lived experiences.

Our Approach

  • Cultural Relevance: We help teachers develop curricula that reflect community history and contemporary realities, fostering a sense of belonging and identity among students.

  • Collaborative Learning: Our workshops encourage collaboration among educators, allowing them to share insights and best practices that are culturally responsive.

  • Hands-On Experiences: We provide practical strategies that teachers can incorporate into their classrooms immediately, enhancing their teaching effectiveness and student engagement.

Benefits for Educators
